About the Program
GRIT is Exit 11’s playwriting program for new and emerging writers wanting to share untold stories. It serves as a platform to amplify emerging and traditionally marginalized voices, including but not limited to: the global majority, LGBTQIA+ communities, immigrants and descendants of immigrants, women, and members of the working class. Open to writers from anywhere in the world, GRIT seeks to discover stories that explore courage and resolve, how larger sociopolitical forces seep into the fleeting moments of everyday life, and the choices we make to resist them.
grit
/ɡrɪt/
noun
- small loose particles of stone or sand.
The curbside grit broke the skin on her knees when she slipped and fell.
- courage and resolve; strength of character.
I’ve known few men who could match her grit.
GRIT as in the rough bits of gravel that we crunch underneath our feet. GRIT as in the dirty work, the sweat, and physical labor. GRIT as in friction, heat, fury, the sharp-cut sizzling when you light a match. GRIT as in how we move and that which we trample as a result. GRIT as in character, tenacious guts that persevere despite the odds. GRIT as in bodily dirt and raised scars. GRIT as in a gripping voice.
2023 Program
Over the course of the three-month residency, writers were encouraged to develop either a new script or a work-in-progress through masterclasses with experienced writers, dramaturgs, and directors, peer support, structured support from the Exit 11 team, and workshop rehearsals with a director and actors.
The 2023 program will culminate in an online playreading festival showcasing the participant’s work as finished scenes, full plays, or works-in-progress.
The GRIT 2023 Playreading Festival will occur on Zoom on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 14:00. To attend the playreading festival, click the button below and fill in the short registration form.
